Pioneer Award

Theater owner John Balaban, left, accepts the Box Office Magazine "Pioneer Award" from editor J. Harry Toler on May 14, 1947. The award was to the Balaban & Katz Theatre Corp. in recognition of the firm's introduction of air conditioning to theaters in 1917, when the company opened the air conditioned Central Park Theatre in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood.
