Lt. Mattie Rawski, also a member of the 1986 group, said hard work is the best way for a woman to prove herself. She was a firefighter for 11 years before taking a job as a fire prevention inspector. "The only thing that mattered was if we did our job. They were looking at us to see whether we could carry our own boots," she said. "That means you go in, pull a hose, put out a fire, carry the water can, the pipe hose, the ax and be able to pull a ceiling."
