University of Chicago

With the university's elite reputation and the surrounding upscale Hyde Park neighborhood, musical events here are often overlooked just about everywhere else in the city ¿ despite the area's great classical, jazz and global programming. Even if ticket prices for campus events are higher for nonstudents and nonfaculty, they're usually more affordable than comparable events farther north. The landmark Mandel Hall will present the renowned Russian chamber ensemble the Borodin Quartet on Oct. 21 in a program featuring its unique interpretations of Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich's compositions. It's also not too soon to plan on seeing the inventive New York-based jazz singer Gretchen Parlato at Mandel on April 15. A couple of blocks south, at 1414 E. 59th St., is the International House, which will host some of the events at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival on the nearby Midway, Sept. 24 and 25. I-House also heats up for the World Music Festival Sept. 16-22, with musicians from around the planet usually engaging with their compatriots who live upstairs in the building. Come early and shop for a wide selection of music-related volumes at the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore, and 57th Street Books. Borodin Quartet: 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21, Mandel Hall, 1131 E. 57th St.; $35; 773-702-8068;
