Sheriff: Lice, scabies outbreak at Cook County Jail

Part of Cook County Jail and its hospital have been isolated because of an outbreak of lice and scabies, officials announced today.

A total of 15 inmates, 10 in Division II of the jail and 5 in the mental health unit of Cermak Hospital, have been found to have the parasites, according to a news release from the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Some of the inmates have refused to be treated and had to be restrained to eradicate the pests, according to the release.

Those with the parasites have been isolated from other inmates, and the other inmates in the two units are being treated to keep them from getting the parasites.

Those affected will remain in isolation until the pasts are eradicated, according to the Sheriff.
