To serve and protect

Riot police march into place Monday near Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles outside of a memorial service for 19-year-old Ryanne E. Mace of Carpentersville, who was shot and killed at Northern Illinois University. The police were there to prevent any confrontation with members of Westboro Baptist Church, a fundamentalist Christian group based in Topeka, Kan., who were carrying anti-gay signs.
