"Dancing at Lughnasa" (1998)

Set in playwright Brian Friel's Irish country childhood in the 1930s, the movie (adapted from the 1990 play) is about an inquisitive illegitimate boy of eight named Michael (Darrell Johnston), his mother, Christina Mundy (Catherine McCormack), and his four unmarried aunts: starchy schoolteacher Kate (Meryl Streep); earthy, dance-crazy Maggie (Kathy Burke); childlike Rose (Sophie Thompson); and maternal Agnes (Brid Brennan)---all of whom live together in the country above Ballyberg in County Donegal. It tells the story of family's last summer together. And they show us what a wondrous group they were, what magic they squeezed from lives in a region devastated by Depression and the gathering storm clouds of World War II.
