A 61-year-old man was killed and four people were injured in a four-vehicle crash in northwest suburban Barrington Hills, authorities said.
The man was driving southbound in a Dodge Intrepid on Route 59, south of Route 68, when an SUV traveling northbound struck the Dodge head-on about 3 p.m. Sunday, Barrington Hills police said.
The Intrepid was also struck from the rear by a car that could not avoid the crash, police said.
The driver of the Intrepid was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:43 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The medical examiner's office identified him as Ronald Ziolo, and police said he lived in Elgin.
Moments before striking the Intrepid, the SUV had sideswiped another southbound vehicle, according to police.
The SUV's driver, an 18-year-old Barrington Hills resident, was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake County, officials said. A 44-year-old woman from Orlando, Fla., who was a passenger in the Intrepid, was taken to Saint Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates.
Two occupants of the car that struck the Intrepid from the rear, a 61-year-old man and 44-year-old woman, both of Fox River Grove, were taken to Good Shepherd.
All four people that were hospitalized were expected to survive, police said.
Police and fire departments from several surrounding jurisdictions responded to the scene.
