Effie Gekas cradled by her husband Michael's hands

At 18, Effie Gekas got married and immigrated to the United States from Greece. Now 83, she and her husband, Michael (whose hands cradle her face), live in a Glen Ellyn condominium. She raised their two children, Ann and Paul, and then worked selling hats at a department store, distributing mail at Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s headquarters and in the dry cleaning and tailoring shops her husband operated. About 15 years ago, the couple sold their dry cleaning business and retired, although Effie wound up working again at a Downers Grove department store until it closed recently.<br>

“This time is the best life I ever had. I can’t think of better years than these last ones when we retired completely," she says. "Our daughter lives in the same building with her husband, in a different wing. My husband has been very sickly and they are there if you need them.”
