At 18, Effie Gekas got married and immigrated to the United States from Greece. Now 83, she and her husband, Michael (whose hands cradle her face), live in a Glen Ellyn condominium. She raised their two children, Ann and Paul, and then worked selling hats at a department store, distributing mail at Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s headquarters and in the dry cleaning and tailoring shops her husband operated. About 15 years ago, the couple sold their dry cleaning business and retired, although Effie wound up working again at a Downers Grove department store until it closed recently.
