Colt Firearms Manufacturing has had a major presence in Hartford for more than 150 years. The Colt properties have won several historic designations for its place in American industrial history, developing such firearms as the Colt single-action revolver, one of two guns "that won the West"; the Gatling gun, a pioneering machine gun; and the Colt-Browning, in mass use in World War II. A spectacular 1864 fire destroyed much of the original 1850s complex, but it was soon rebuilt and there was a major expansion during World War I. Huge portions were later demolished, including a massive West Armory in the late 1940s. The latest redevelopment efforts now span more than a decade and three developers -- and supporters are pushing for a national park designation, rare for a city setting.
