UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma will open a restaurant in Southington later this year, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The new Geno's Grille restaurant, part of Auriemma's growing collection of businesses, will open on Main Street at a location previously occupied by Bonterra Grill and Pizzeria.

"[The location] got a good reception from everyone," manager of marketing and promotions Todd Stigliano said. "People from the community, people who live in the Southington area all said it's a great location they go to a lot."

Auriemma also owns Geno's Grille in Storrs, as well as Geno's Fast Break and two takeout businesses at Mohegan Sun.

Stigliano said the new restaurant will resemble the Storrs location, which serves mostly Italian food, in appearance and menu.

Auriemma has spent 29 seasons as the Huskies' coach, winning nine national titles, including this year's. In 2006, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

Auriemma and his associates hope to have Geno's Grille open by late fall but have not set a specific date, Stigliano said.
