Vice President Joe Biden will visit Goodwin College in East Hartford on Wednesday to speak with administrators and students at the private school about the importance of skills building in the workforce.

He is also expected to highlight Goodwin's manufacturing production training program, a year-old initiative at the career-path-focused school.

In the afternoon, Biden is scheduled to attend an event for the Democratic Governors Association at a private home in Greenwich, followed by a fund-raiser for the Democratic Party of Connecticut at a Stamford home, before returning to Washington in the evening.

Goodwin College, which enrolled 3,583 students last fall, started with 17 students in the new manufacturing program. The first group, which was offered the program tuition-free, is about to graduate.

The year-long Certified Production Technician program has two tracks: one for people who already work in manufacturing, designed to improve their skills in safety, measurement, quality, production processes and maintenance; and one for high school students, to encourage them to consider manufacturing.

The program, prepares students to pass the Manufacturing Skills Standard Council's Certified Production Technician test. At the launch of the program, Goodwin officials said the starting wages are $14 an hour for these jobs. The program, they said, would cost $9,000 in tuition.
