Palm Beach International Airport adds a new market Thursday with the launch of nonstop service between West Palm Beach and Asheville, N.C. on Allegiant Air.

The Las Vegas-based carrier will fly between the destinations Thursdays and Sundays, airport officials announced Tuesday.

"Having nonstop service to and from Asheville will be an excellent getaway for Palm Beach County residents in additional to bringing more visitors to the Palm Beaches," said Bruce Pelly, the county's director of airports. "We are so pleased to welcome Allegiant Air …and hope this will be the first of many cities they will serve in this market.

Allegiant has served Asheville from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport since November 2012.

"The Asheville community has embraced our service to four other sunny destinations, and we are confident that they will appreciate our new low-cost flights to Palm Beach," said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company President and COO, in a statement.

Thursday's festivities for the first flight from Asheville begin with a water cannon salute on arrival at 4:14 p.m. followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
