He came from Ascension Health, a Catholic health system based in St. Louis, where he was vice president of operational finance. He also has held financial positions at Daughters of Charity National Health System in Baltimore, Franciscan Health System of Aston, Pa., and <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORGHC0000026" title="St. Joseph Medical Center" href="/topic/health/healthcare/st.-joseph-medical-center-ORGHC0000026.topic">St. Joseph Medical Center</a> in Reading, Pa.<br>

Filer has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Susquehanna University of Selinsgrove, Pa., and is a CPA.
