The CNN Money website reports that Bankrate has ranked South Dakota as the third best state in the country for retired people.
While states such as Florida are known as havens for senior citizens, other states ranked higher for quality of life. The ratings were based on cost of living, taxes, access to health care, crime rates and climate.
South Dakota has the country's lowest crime rate, and an estimated state and local tax burden of 7.6 percent, lower than every state but Alaska, according to the report. Aberdeen was mentioned as a good smaller city for those retiring.
Tennessee ranked No. 1, followed by Louisiana at No. 2.
