To receive the recognition, the diabetes team underwent a 10-month process that included the establishment of a local advisory board, implementation of a curriculum that meets a national diabetes education standard and documentation of all education program elements outlined by the American Diabetes Association.
Sanford Aberdeen's diabetes program includes three support groups:
Support group for adults with diabetes: meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month from September to May.
Support group for parents and children with diabetes: meets 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month from September to May.
Support group for high school students with diabetes.
The program at Sanford Aberdeen started when the medical center opened in July.
The team includes diabetes nurse educator Nancy Hartung and Lisa Kopecky, a registered dietitian and licensed medical nutrition therapist.
