Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year: Patrick Kelly, Calvert Hall, senior, attack

The No. 1 Cardinals (16-2) had a roster stacked with talented players and capable leaders. But it was Patrick Kelly, a three-year starter and captain, who took charge throughout the season — and in particular the big moments — to lead Calvert Hall to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship.

Signed to play at North Carolina, Kelly was the quarterback of the Cardinals' attack with fine dodging ability, strong hands and the smarts to know when to shoot or distribute. He finished the season with 44 goals and 41 assists, and also collected 57 ground balls.

"He is just completely level all the time — the same when it's a stressful game and a not-so- stressful game," Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly said of the Under Armour All-American.

In the first half of an early-season game, Patrick Kelly took a high hit that required 33 stitches to his face, but he returned to play in the second half. He had a four-goal, four-assist performance in an 11-10 win over Boys' Latin in the MIAA semifinals and two goals and three assists in a 17-3 win over Loyola in the championship.
