Towson (21-9, 12-3 Colonial Athletic Association) tied the team record for single-season wins at the Division I level.
The Tigers posted their fifth consecutive victory — matching their longest winning streak of the season — and ninth in their past 10 games.
Towson remains second in the CAA standings behind Delaware (21-9, 13-2).
The Tigers trailed by 10 points on two occasions but each time made a run to get back into the game. Towson finally took over late, and a pair of three-point plays by Benimon proved pivotal. The first put the Tigers ahead 56-54 with 7:49 left, and Towson never trailed again.
The Tigers made 30 of 31 foul shots (96.8 percent), while the Dukes made 17 of 26 (65.4 percent).
Benimon, who leads the nation in doubledoubles, finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Senior swingman Rafriel Guthrie scored 16 points. The other three Towson starters fouled out after combining for 17 points.
Andrey Semenov led the Dukes (11-18, 6-9) with 22 points in his final home game.
American 64, Navy 55: Guard John Schoof hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the last with 48.2 seconds left in the game, to lead the visiting Eagles (17-11, 13-4 Patriot League) past the host Midshipmen (9-19, 4-13).
American was up only three points when Jesse Reed's long 3-pointer as the shot clock expired gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game to that point, 54-48.
Navy saw its chances of hosting a first-round conference tournament game eliminated.
Holy Cross 65, Loyola Maryland 52: Malcolm Miller scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, leading the Crusaders (18-11, 12-5 Patriot) past the host Greyhounds (10-18, 5-12).
Franz Rassman scored 15 points for Loyola, which lost its sixth game in a row. R.J. Williams (St. Frances) added 13 points.
McDaniel 57, Muhlenberg 52: Evan Pupelis and Nick Perugino each scored 12 points and the host Green Terror (18-8) hung on to beat the Mules (16-10) in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament.
McDaniel advances to the semifinals to face top-seeded host Dickinson on Friday at 8 p.m.
Stevenson 83, Hood 72: Justin Kuntz (Glen Burnie) had 20 points to lead the host Mustangs (19-7) past the Blazers (17-10) in a Commonwealth Conference semifinal.
Cameron Cook (Calvert Hall) led all scorers with 26 points for Hood. Stevenson hosts Alvernia, an 81-77 winner over Messiah, in Saturday's championship.
American 63, Navy 50: Arron Zimmerman scored a game-high 20 points and the second-place host Eagles (20-8, 13-4 Patriot) held the first-place Mids (22-6, 14-3) to nine second-half field goals.
Audrey Bauer had nine points and Jade Geif had eight for Navy, which can secure the top seed in the conference tournament by beating Loyola Maryland on Saturday.
Holy Cross 59, Loyola Maryland 49: The Greyhounds (5-23, 2-15 Patriot League) shot 40 percent from the field in a loss to the host Crusaders (18-10, 10-7).
Virginia Union 73, Bowie State 53: Ashle Freeman led all players with 25 points and the third-seeded Panthers (11-15) beat the second-seeded Bulldogs (11-14) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association quarterfinal in Charlotte, N.C.
