Born Jean Wisniewski in Baltimore and raised on Andre Street in Locust Point, she was a 1960 Seton High School graduate. She earned a degree at Anne Arundel Community College and attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
She met her future husband, Larry South, a defense contractor, while on a skiing trip in Vermont. Both were then working at the National Security Agency.
Mrs. South was also a paralegal, an Anne Arundel County schools bus driver and a bookkeeper for her husband's business.
She was a member of the Davidsonville Dance Club and Goddard Dance Club. Family members said she enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, and playing Sudoku puzzles.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew by the Bay Roman Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway in Annapolis, where she was a member.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years; a son, Joseph South of Bel Air; a daughter, Katherine South of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Joseph Wisniewski of Baltimore and Thomas Wisniewski of Salisbury; and two granddaughters.
