Essex courthouse escape incident ends as prisoner is captured

Felony theft suspect Thomas Edward Maroney was apprehended Saturday morning in the North Point area, about 12 hours after he escaped on his way to Baltimore County Detention Center.

Nineteen-year-old Maroney, of the 7500 Block of Durwood Road, escaped from the Essex District Courthouse in the 8900 block of Kelso Drive shortly after 8 p.m. Friday. Baltimore County police said Friday that Maroney broke free from the private security officers, "took off running" and escaped custody.

He is charged with numerous misdemeanor property crimes and a felony theft charge.

The county uses a private company to handle bail review transports, police said. Det. Cathy Batton, a police spokeswoman, said she did not know if the man was handcuffed or restrained in some other way at the time of his escape.
