Driver dies after SUV crashes into garage of Annapolis home

A 25-year-old Virginia man died Monday after his SUV crashed into a garage in Annapolis and caught fire, Anne Arundel County police said.

Police said officers were called around 4:29 a.m. Sunday to a home in the 1200 block of Fort Hill Court. There, a Jeep Cherokee driven by Dana Brian Simonson, of Centreville, had crashed into the garage, pushing in the garage door. The driver appeared to be passed out with his foot on the gas pedal, causing the right rear wheel to spin until it caught fire, police said. The fire burned through the exterior of the car and into the passenger compartment, police said. The driver was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he died.

No one was home at the time, according to police. Police said they are investigating the crash and do not know whether alcohol or a medical condition may have contributed to it.
