Workshop The Office of Children's Services will conduct "More New Age Challenges for Parents of Adolescents," a discussion panel on maintaining open communication with middle and high school-age children. The free workshop is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia. The panel will include representatives from local community programs and student speakers, and address a range of topics, including managing anger, dating and relationships, promoting positive self-esteem, and sibling rivalry. After the panel presentations, parents will have the opportunity to take part in an open discussion or submit questions anonymously. MLK holiday celebration The Howard County Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission will hold its 27th annual celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 15, at Howard Community College's Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. The event will begin with a reception at 2 p.m., and the program will start at 3 p.m. Free and open to the public; attendees are asked to bring a can of food to donate to the food bank. Guest speaker will be Jeff Johnson, chairman and CEO of the Jeff Johnson Institute. The celebration will also include artistic performances and recognition of the 2011 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Essay Contest winners and the "Living the Dream" award recipient. Attendees will also have the opportunity to volunteer for the commission's "Day of Service" project scheduled for Monday, Jan. 16, at the Gateway Building, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive in Columbia. Volunteers will help assemble emergency preparedness kits that will be distributed to needy families by the Community Action Council. Environmental program The Earth Forum of Howard County is sponsoring "The Chesapeake Bay and Your Back Yard" from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County, 9325 Presbyterian Circle in Columbia. Rep. John Sarbanes will discuss working to restore the health of the bay, promote stormwater management and increase environmental literacy. 'Children on Board' Howard County's annual Preschool/Child Care Information Fair, sponsored by the Office of Children's Services, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Lane in Clarksville. The event will provide parents, guardians, grandparents and child care personnel with information on child care and preschool programs. Sweetheart dance Dads can take their daughters out for an evening of dancing and fun on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Kiwanis-Wallas Hall, 3300 Norberts Way in Ellicott City.
