A councilman under fire

The news: A judge decided that the Anne Arundel County Council can go ahead with two bills aimed at forcing out Councilman Daryl Jones, a Democrat who is about to serve five months of prison time for tax evasion.

Our take: The ruling wasn't on the merits but on a technicality, and there's a good chance that the council's efforts will ultimately be for naught. Nonetheless, Mr. Jones' attorney is floating the idea of having the council drop the matter if he gives up his council salary while incarcerated. The council shouldn't go for it. Mr. Jones should resign.
