No. 8: Lil Shelton retires (3% of the vote)

After winning a national federation record 20th state championship, Severna Park field hockey coach Lil Shelton announced in November that she was retiring after 37 years at a program she built from the ground up. Having a feeling it could he her final season, the Falcons refused to finish with anything short of a title. ¿We worked all year to get this title for Ms. Shelton,¿ junior Marissa Balleza said after the 3-1 victory over Bethesda-Chevy Chase in the 4A final. ¿It¿s huge for us to get her the 20th title.¿ Shelton -- who began coaching the sport after one day finding some old equipment in a closet at the school -- led her team to 31 county championships, 29 regional crowns and a career record of 544-60-10.
