Myth: Refinery closures on the East Coast will have little impact on what we pay for gas and diesel fuel this spring. Answer: False. During 2011, Northeast refineries supplied more than a third -- 38 percent -- of the gasoline consumed in the Northeast market. In-region refineries supplied nearly two-thirds -- 61 percent -- of the diesel fuel used on the East Coast. Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey have seen high gasoline prices so far this spring, analysts said. Even Maryland, Washington and Virginia have seen unusually high prices.
