RCA mascot Nipper James Wells of Fairfax, Va., looks up at Nipper, the famous canine mascot of the RCA Record Co., in his back yard in 1995. Wells, a self-described collector and junk dealer, paid $1 for the statue in 1973. The 14-foot, 1,800-pound dog for decades presided over downtown Baltimore atop a record distributor's building. Baltimore reclaimed part of its quirky past in 1996 when the City Life Museums raised $25,000 for Nipper and his gramophone.
