Pratt Street Riots haversack

By most accounts, the first blood of the American Civil War was shed in Baltimore, when a group of Massachusetts militia, changing trains on their way to Washington, was attacked by Confederate sympathizers on April 19, 1861 -- just seven days after the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter. This haversack, on display at the Maryland Historical Society, was carried by 24-year-old Sidney L. Colley, a member of the 33rd Massachusetts who was wounded during the melee.Barbara Haddock Taylor/Baltimore Sun
