Anne Arundel County native Johns Hopkins (1795-1873) was a successful merchant and investor, but that only tells a part of the story. Hopkins included provisions in his will for a series of institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and schools of nursing and medicine. He also left behind a convenient way to tell a native Baltimorean from a pretender -- anyone who says "John" instead of "Johns Hopkins" is definitely not from these parts. This oval portrait of Hopkins as a young man is in the collection of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
