Orioles officially hire pitching guru Rick Peterson

After weeks of discussion and three separate meetings, the Orioles and pitching guru Rick Peterson have agreed to a much-anticipated deal Monday that will put Peterson in charge of developing pitching throughout the organization, an industry source confirmed.

In essence, Peterson will be minor league pitching coordinator – a spot vacant since Alan Dunn left during the 2011 season – with some additional responsibilities and a new title, director of pitching development.

Peterson, 57, is a renowned former big-league pitching coach (Oakland A’s, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers) who has been nicknamed “The Professor” for his merging of psychological philosophies with biomedical research and findings.

He had interviewed three times with the Orioles this offseason, including meeting once with Orioles manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Rick Adair.

Peterson, who was fired by Brewers last offseason when there was a managerial change, was first drafted by the Orioles out of a Pennsylvania high school in the early 1970s. He did not sign, and eventually pitched in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization, before becoming a coach.

He has been credited with getting the most out of his pitchers, from stars like Tom Glavine, Barry Zito and Tim Hudson to lesser known hurlers such as Chris Narveson and former Oriole John Maine.

Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio was first to report that the long-reported deal was official.
