Orioles notes: Arrieta could be considered for bullpen spot

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he has liked what he has read in organizational reports about right-hander Jake Arrieta, who is 3-4 with a 4.91 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Norfolk since being demoted in mid-July.

Arrieta has allowed only two runs in each of his past two starts.

"Good, he had a good outing last time out," Showalter said of Arrieta's recent performance. "He's getting real close to being in the form he needs to be to help."

Arrieta is expected to be a September call-up for the Orioles, but if the starters are pitching well, Showalter said Arrieta could be considered for a bullpen spot.

"Could. That's a discussion I'm sure, if that's a possibility, … I and Dan [Duquette] and [pitching development director] Rick Peterson will have," Showalter said. "If they think he can do it."

Showalter said he'll meet with Duquette, the club's executive vice president, Tuesday to discuss potential call-ups for the Sept. 1 expansion of rosters.

It's possible some players will not join the Orioles until after the seasons at Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie end Sept. 3. As long as those players are in the Orioles system -- which they would be -- they could still be eligible for the postseason roster because the Orioles have several players on the disabled list who can be replaced.

So Arrieta, for instance, could finish the season with Norfolk and, theoretically, still be eligible to pitch in the postseason for the Orioles if they get there.

Betemit returning to Maryland

Infielder Wilson Betemit (wrist) is progressing without pain and is expected to travel back to Maryland from Sarasota this weekend. Showalter said Betemit will be ready to take batting practice outdoors by Monday and, with a potential hurricane heading to Florida, the weather may not be conducive.

So Betemit will come back to Maryland and take batting practice at Camden Yards or in Bowie on Monday or Tuesday and could begin a rehab assignment by Wednesday. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 12. He hit .264 with 12 homers and 37 RBIs in 97 games for the Orioles before the injury.

Around the horn

Lefty Troy Patton (right ankle) may throw a ball in Sarasota for the first time Tuesday or Wednesday since going on the DL. … Orioles pitchers Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz caught the ceremonial first pitches Saturday from 2012 Orioles Hall of Fame inductees Rich Dauer and Mike Mussina. … Mussina was introduced in the on-field ceremony by athletic trainer Richie Bancells while Dauer was introduced by former teammate Rick Dempsey. The late Walter Youse, a long-time scout, was honored posthumously with the Herb Armstrong Award for contributions by non-uniformed personnel. Duquette made the introduction.
