The only Triple Crown champion to be bought at auction ($17,500), Seattle Slew proved a steal. As a yearling, the dark brown colt with the blue-collar roots was broken (prepared for riding) for eight months at Andor Farm in Monkton. The conditioning regimen worked. Under trainer Billy Turner's tutelage, Seattle Slew won all three of his starts as a juvenile, earning honors as racing's best 2-year-old. In 1977, he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, plus three more races, to become the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history (9-0). At age 4, though nagged by injuries, Slew still won the Marlboro Cup Invitational, defeating Affirmed in the only meeting ever between two Triple Crown winners. He retired with 14 victories in 17 starts, and more than $1.2 million in earnings.
