Former Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith is one of the final candidates in talks to become Gov. Martin O'Malley's new transportation secretary, according to several people familiar with the situation.
The job has been vacant for more than a year, but an appointment to the post will likely be made soon, an administration source said.
Smith, who left office in 2010 under term limits, is a partner in the Towson-based law firm of Smith, Gildea & Schmidt. He also serves on the board of directors of the University of Maryland Medical System and the Board of Visitors of the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. He did not respond to requests for comment.
Acting Transportation Secretary Darrell Mobley is also among the candidates considered for the job, several sources said. He could not reached for comment.
O'Malley's spokeswoman Raquel Guillory said no final decision has been reached on filling the cabinet-level post.
