NEW YORK -- Chris Davis has been named the American League's cleanup hitter for Tuesday night's All-Star Game, manager Jim Leyland announced.
The Orioles first baseman, starting in his first All-Star appearace, leads the majors with 37 homers. He typically bats fifth for the Orioles.
In Tuesday's game at Citi Field, Davis will bat behind the Angels' Mike Trout, the Yankees' Robinson Cano and the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera.
Leyland, the manager of the reigning AL champion Tigers, was asked if it was tough to decide on his batting order with all the sluggers voted into his lineup.
“Even I can’t mess that one up," he said. "But, now, we just sat down and put Trout up front obviously for some speed and bunched a bunch of power guys together and we’ll see how it will play out. A little bit of lefty-righty, but I don’t think that makes a lot of difference in this game. You really never know how it is going to play out. But you know you have to put them somewhere and I felt comfortable with the lineup I made out … These are the greatest so, like I say, it’s pretty hard to mess that one up.”
Orioles center fielder Adam Jones will bat seventh for the AL, and shortstop J.J. Hardy will hit ninth.
Leyland named Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer his starter. Mets right-hander Matt Harvey will start in his home ballpark for the National League.
