The Ravens will be closely gauging how veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe looks in a starting role. With Dennis Pitta declared out for the season with a dislocated and fractured hip and Ed Dickson sidelined for at least a week and probably longer with a slightly torn hamstring, the Shiancoe insurance policy is being immediately employed. Shiancoe's quickness, hands and durability have all looked solid so far, but how the 33-year-old performs against another team is critical after he didn't catch a pass last season with the New England Patriots. The coaching staff knows what blocking tight end Billy Bajema can do, but want to see how the athleticism of rookie tight end Matt Furstenburg (Maryland) translates in a game situation.
