15. Barbaro (2003-2007)

Horsemen still debate the legacy of the Maryland-based colt, had fate not intervened. At Churchill Downs, Barbaro broke from the 20th slot, stumbled out of the gate ... and still won the 2006 Kentucky Derby by 6-1/2 lengths, the largest margin of victory there in 60 years.

A dark bay, Barbaro became only the sixth horse ever to leave the Derby undefeated. Trained by Michael Matz and stabled at Fair Hil, he seemed destined for greatness. Then came the Preakness, where, 200 yards from the start, Barbaro broke down, his right hind leg shattered.

Eight months and multiple surgeries later, the people's horse was gone. America wept.
