Joyce Wilson has been a billing supervisor for MedStar Physician Partners since June 2012. She has been with the company since 1989.
What does your job entail?
I supervise a specialty team of five [accounts receivable] representatives who do billing for a number of different medical offices that include such services as endocrinology, pulmonology, oncology, gastroenterology, allergy medicine, urology and some surgery. My team and I also work with insurance companies and resolve issues to get claims paid in a timely manner.
As a supervisor, I touch base with my team members every day to make sure they have what they need, and I have one-on-one meetings with them each month. I spend two weeks every month training new associates, preparing their classes and helping them transition onto a team. And each month, I prepare reports that summarize clients charges and give updates on the status of insurance claims.
What kind of schooling or training did you go through?
I have a high school diploma. Early in my career, I completed a medical terminology class, but most of my training has been on the job. MedStar Health offers education classes, and I have benefited from taking a number of them to help me transition into a new role of managing people and organizing the workday.
What inspired you to this career?
I got into health care because it is a growing field. I had been an office manager before moving into health care. I like interacting with people and working in customer service.
What do you like best about your job?
I truly enjoy the interactions with [Medstar] associates and our clients, and I like doing research to solve problems. I like making a difference every day, whether its being there for an associate or teaching or solving an area of concern for a client. Its very satisfying to solve an A/R problem for the client when their payment might have been late or delayed in any way.
What are the challenges?
One challenge I face is in trying to get everything done. I set personal goals every day, and a communication whether it is an email or a telephone call from a client can come in that changes everything. In my role, it is important to be flexible. Working with an array of personalities, backgrounds and experiences on a team is also a challenge but one I truly relish and one from which I learn.
Average salary ranges $40,000-$50,000 per year, depending on experience.
