Perhaps nothing mixes Baltimore's sense of culture with its sense of the absurd better than this giant ball of string, pieced together from decades of leftover twine at Haussner's in Highlandtown. Fine food, served in rooms crammed full of paintings and other artwork, plus a giant ball of string? No wonder Haussner's was such a local favorite until it closed in 1999, after 73 years in business. The giant ball, which sold at auction for $7,500 following the closure, now sits in the window of the Antique Man store in Fells Point.
