No. 9: Brown Advisory Inc.

Alex. Brown & Sons, a Baltimore-based investment bank that traced its roots to 1800, was swallowed up in the many mega-mergers of the late 1990s. But its investment management affiliate carried on as an employee-owned, independent firm still based in Baltimore. Community is important to Brown Advisory's 260 Baltimore-area employees, all of whom are shareholders in the company. In addition to its employees' volunteer work, the firm contributes to the community by supporting a number of nonprofit causes and by matching employees' support of charitable organizations.
