No. 11: Acts of charity

Many companies are involved in philanthropic projects and encourage their employees to participate, too. Some say giving back is one of their core values. But companies also find that good deeds can raise their profile and create a bond among their employees who volunteer.

Each year, SC&H Group (above), an accounting and consulting firm in Sparks, holds a day of service in which workers volunteer for one of seven community or charitable activities.

Comcast employees also participate in a day of service annually, and this year the company awarded $109,000 in scholarships to Maryland high school seniors who demonstrated leadership, academic achievement and community service.

T. Rowe Price gives workers time off with pay to volunteer in the community and last year 60 percent of them took part, donating 76,520 hours of their time. The company also matches employees' charitable donations dollar for dollar, kicking in $2.5 million last year on top of workers' gifts. The Baltimore-based money manager says creating a stronger community ultimately creates a stronger Price.
