Former Lake Clifton point guard Antonio Barton is considering his options after receiving his release from Memphis on Monday.
Anthony “Doodie” Lewis, Barton’s AAU coach at Cecil Kirk, said the junior plans to graduate from Memphis this summer and be eligible to play at another Division I school right away.
“Antonio will probably wait until the next couple weeks [to formulate a list],” Lewis said. “It’s still a little bit early.”
Barton appeared in 26 games for the Tigers as a junior, averaging 5.6 points and shooting 39.7 percent from the field. He was sidelined for the latter parts of the 2012-13 season with a fractured foot.
Lewis said it’s possible that Barton – who has a young daughter in Baltimore – could look to finish his college career closer to home. But Lewis doesn’t “know what his mindset is right now. Anything is possible.”
Lewis had updates on a few other former Cecil Kirk players:
** Montray Clemons, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound forward, will transfer to Pensacola (Fla.) State College from DePaul. Clemons, a Poly grad who averaged 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds as a redshirt freshman with the Blue Demons, was a Big East All-Academic selection during the 2011-12 season. He received a medical redshirt that season after rupturing the patella tendon in his left knee. Former Poly forward Chas Brown and former Calvert Hall guard Denzel Richardson were freshmen on Pensacola’s roster this season.
** Former Milford Mill guard Kyle Thomas, who has spent the past year at a prep school in New Jersey, is considering Central Connecticut State, Morgan State and Robert Morris. “That’ll be done in the next week,” Lewis said.
** Two former Lake Clifton and Cecil Kirk guards will go to junior college next year. Lionel Greene has signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. James Boone is also considering Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, according to Lewis.
