Saalem, 13, smiles at a plastic refuse center where he and others bring discarded plastic trash to be recycled in Herat. Saalem earns the equivalent of 30 cents US for every kilo of plastic he brings here. The plastic is sent over the border to Pakistan where it is compressed and recycled. According to the World Bank more than a third of the population of Afghanistan live below the poverty line, more than half are vulnerable and at serious risk of falling into poverty.
