Adam Jones gets double-dose of his own medicine

During a player’s postgame television interview after a big game, it’s the norm to see Orioles center fielder Adam Jones stalking in the background, searching for the right moment to deliver a shaving cream pie to the face of the interviewee.

After Friday night’s 6-0 win over Boston, Jones got a double dose of his own medicine, receiving two pies to the face — including one from hitting coach Jim Presley.

Jones’ performance warranted it, too. He went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs for this third career multi-home run game and first since May 29, 2012 at Toronto.

Jones has 22 home runs this season, but neither was similar to some of the deep shots he’s had this year, like his go-ahead home run against New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera on July 7. Instead, both home runs off Red Sox right-hander John Lackey went to right field and hit the railing in front of the flag court.

“Late on them,” Jones said. “Just fastballs going to the middle of the plate, and I was late on them. Strong enough to get them out.”

Entering Friday, Jones had never hit a home run against Lackey and owned a .219 average with 10 strikeouts in 34 plate appearances. But the center fielder got the better of Lackey for his first home runs in five games. He homered four times in five games from July 12-20 against Toronto and Texas. Jones is batting .301 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 21 games in July.

“You know me,” Jones said. “I’m just trying to hit the ball hard. I don’t care where the ball goes. Foul line to foul line. You want to put the ball in play with some aggressiveness. Tonight, they snuck out.”
