A former governor and current senator from the swing state of Virginia, Warner has steered a centrist course on tax and budget issues on Capitol Hill. He surprised many when he decided against running for president in 2008, citing family concerns. He announced last year that he would remain in Congress rather than seek another term as the Old Dominion's governor, leaving him free to take a second look at the White House.
