Jonathan Husky is everywhere at UConn, even in the art galleries. He is the star of the new exhibit at The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, at 1 Royce Circle, Suite 101B, on the campus in Storrs.
"Mascots! Mask Performance in the 21st Century" will highlight mascots for professional, college and high school sports teams, companies and other organizations, including Big Jay and Baby Jay from University of Kansas, Lil' Red from University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Boston Red Sox's Wally the Green Monster; Winger, the former mascot of the Washington Capitols; Clutch from the Houston Rockets and the Famous San Diego Chicken.
"Although mascots are an ever-present element of American culture, they are very rarely celebrated and considered as a part of centuries-old global mask traditions," Ballard director John Bell said.
The exhibit will open on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 5:30 p.m., with refreshments and a free tour. The show will be up until Feb. 11.
Admission is free. Donations appreciated.
