Mark Twain House Gets Liquor License

Mark Twain once wrote “One holds a bottle of red wine by the neck, a woman by the waist, and a bottle of champagne by the derriere.” Visitors to Twain’s home can now drink to that.

The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford just got a liquor license and can now set up a bar whenever and wherever an event is held. The Twain bar was christened on May 31 at a book-signing event with “Ask Amy” Dickinson and Gina Barreca.

The bar will be open again on June 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Friends International Wine Tasting fundraiser, where guests will sample wines from Spain, Italy, Australia, Argentina, Washington state and California. Another Twain event this month, not on-site at the Twain, is booze-related. The “Mark Twain” Celebrity Bartender Fundraiser will be held June 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the L Bar at Hartford Marriott Downtown, 200 Columbus Blvd. A Twain impersonator will man the bar. The museum will receive 10 percent of the proceeds from sit-down dining-room food and drink sales, as well as all of the bar tips, as long as the purchasers reserve a table or let the server know ahead of time that they are there for the fund-raiser.
