TheaterWorks has announced its 2017-18 season. All of the playwrights are new to TheaterWorks, but some are well-known from other theaters in Connecticut.

The season opens in October with “The Wolves” by Sarah DeLappe. The award-winning play, about an audacious adolescent girls soccer team, had a successful off-Broadway run in late 2016 and has been done at a lot of regional theaters this year.

“The Wolves” will be followed in January/February by Nick Payne’s “Constellations,” which had a star-studded production on Broadway in 2015 (with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson). It chronicles the romance between a beekeeper and a theoretical cosmologist.

Ayad Akhtar’s “Invisible Hand” is at TheaterWorks in March/April. Akhtar’s “Disgraced” was seen at Long Wharf Theatre in the fall 2015 and “Invisible Hand” was done last summer at the Westport Country Playhouse. It concerns an investment banker who is being held captive in Pakistan.

Matthew Lopez’s “The Legend of Georgia McBride” plays TheaterWorks in May/July. Lopez is closely associated with Hartford Stage, which has staged his “The Whipping Man” and “Somewhere” as well as the world premiere of his “Reverberation.” “Georgia McBride,” a comedy-with-music about a failed Elvis impersonator who finds himself performing in a drag revue, had an off-Broadway run in 2015.

The season ends in July/August with Robert Askins’ “Hand to God,” the Broadway hit about a sinister hand puppet that wreaks havoc in a Texan church community.

Many details, including directors, casts and precise performance dates have yet to be announced. Also no word on whether the holiday treat “Christmas on the Rocks” will return for a fifth season.

TheaterWorks celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The 2016-17 season included the two most commercially successful shows in the theater’s history: Mark St. Germain’s play “Relativity” (starring Richard Dreyfuss) and the Tom Kitt/Brian Yorkey musical “Next to Normal.”

The current season has not yet concluded: Tanya Saracho’s “Fade” runs through June 30 and the world premiere of Jacques Lamarre’s “Raging Skillet” is July 20 through Aug. 27.
