The steampunk movement brings a hip fashion sense and sensibility to the historical Industrial Age, and so does the New England Carousel Museum at 95 Riverside Ave. in Bristol.
The Brass Ring Academy and Cabaret, which holds fundraising events for the museum, is making its Saturday, Jan. 9, happening a steampunk spectacular, with eight hours of workshops and activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by 4-1/2 hours of cabaret performances from 7 to 11:30 p.m.
The academy offers insights on “19th Century Romantic Opera” (with Nicole Olivia), “Piracy in the Age of Steam” (with Jeff Gedney) and nearly a dozen other topics, plus music, dancing and much more. The headlining cabaret act, presented in conjunction with the Your MiniCon convention also happening this weekend, is Aurelio Voltaire, the New York-based science-fiction-themed singer-songwriter who’s also known as an artist, actor, director and School of Visual Arts professor.
Voltaire goes on at 10:45 p.m., preceded by Venus Lens Cap at 7 p.m, Them Damn Hamiltons at 8:15 p.m. and the White Elephant Burlesque Society at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for the academy, $20 for the cabaret, or $35 for both. Information: 860-585-5411 and brassringct.com.
