Hungry For Theater?

How about some international theater? The Indian Ensemble of Bangalore is coming to Hartford and New Haven with the U.S. premiere of "Thook" ("Spit"). First stop is the HartBeat Ensemble's Carriage House Theater at 360 Farmington Ave. in Hartford with performances Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 4 to 6.

Then it's off to New Haven's Iseman Theater, 1156 Chapel St., for a run Sept. 10 and 11. The play deals with food issues ranging from the Bengal famine of 1943 to the Food Riots of 2008. The play is presented in both Hindi and English, with English super-titles. All performances will include post-performance talk-backs.

There will be a post-show reception with the cast at Hartford's FireBox Restaurant on 539 Broad St. on Sept. 6 and a pre-show reception at New Haven's Ordinary Restaurant, 990 Chapel St., on Sept. 10. War Is Hell On The Homefront, Too

It's 1943 in rural Louisiana and three sisters-in-law are waiting for their husbands to come home from the war. It's the story of R.T. Robinson's play "The Cover of Life," which is the first of this season's free play-reading series at the Little Theatre of Manchester on Tuesday, Sept 9, at 7 p.m. The theater is the resident company in Cheney Hall, 177 Hartford Road, Manchester. When The Mean Streets Had Character

Chazz Palmintieri knows tough. He's played his share of gangsters, villains and killers in his career on stage, screen and TV. But his most interesting characters come from his growing up in rough-and-tumble neighborhood of the Bronx, many of whom are featured in his "A Bronx Tale."
