'Male Intellect: An Oxymoron' Opens Seven Angels' Season

Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury opens its 2017-18 season with the one-man, five-character show "The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?" by Robert Dubac.

The show, which ruminates on the age-old question "What do women want?" has been around for 20 years or so. Dubac hasn't been the only one performing it. So it's exciting news that he's the one doing it at Seven Angels Theatre Sept. 21 through Oct. 15.

"He still does the show all around the country," says Seven Angels' Artistic Director Semina De Laurentis. "But he hasn't been to Connecticut at all."

Seven Angels has regularly offered one-person shows, most recently Jon Peterson's Anthony Newley tribute "He Wrote Good Songs" and April Woodall in Jacques LaMarre's "Born Fat." De Laurentis likes to balance her seasons with smaller and larger pieces as well as both new and traditional ones.

"The Male Intellect" will be followed by the five-man historical rock and roll revue "Million Dollar Quartet" Oct. 26 through Nov. 19. Then comes another one-person show: Sharon McKnight in "Red Hot Mama — The Sophie Tucker Story" ; and from April 5 to 29 the new comedy "Second Chance" by Mike Vogel.

"This season centered on the opportunity to do the Dion musical, and where I could fit that." That show, "The Wanderer," will end the Seven Angels season May 17 through June 17.

"It's not the same old same old," De Laurentis says. "We have a very broad-based audience." She's also deft at blending strong local talent into shows that also feature actors from New York or elsewhere.

Asked to sum up the forthcoming Seven Angels season, De Laurentis sounds like an angel herself: "Positive. Good for the soul."
