C.S. Lewis’ series of stories about the enchanted land of Narnia began with “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” Four kids climb into some furniture and emerge in a magical realm where they meet Father Christmas, Tumnus the faun, Jadis the White Witch, a unicorn, a talking wolf, married beavers, elves and of course the great lion Aslan.
Pearwater Productions is using the 1989 adaptation by Joseph Robinette. The show’s directed by Jeffrey Kagan-McCann.
“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” bewitches the Carriage House Theater, 360 Farmington Ave., Hartford, Oct. 18 to 28, with performances Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20, $18 students and seniors. ‘Doubt’ Christens New Theater Space
Quinnipiac University has a new performance space: the 100-seat Theatre Arts Center and is making John Patrick Shanley’s drama “Doubt” the center’s inaugural production Oct. 12 to 14.
Subtitled “A Parable,” “Doubt” was an off-Broadway and Broadway hit in 2004 and 2005, had a national tour and has become a staple of college and community theaters. The play, set in 1964, concerns a nun’s investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct at a church school in the Bronx.
The Quinnipiac production is directed by the chairman of the school’s theater program, Kevin Daly, and stars Quinnipiac students Nicolette Fino as Sister Aloysius and Nick Featherston as Father Flynn.
Performances are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at both 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, $10 for students and seniors. theater.qu.edu.
Moonfish’s ‘Star’
Moonfish Theatre, from Galway City, Ireland, is on an international tour with its “freely adapted” stage version of Joseph O’Connor’s historical novel “Star of the Sea.” A six person cast performs the drama in English and Irish on a bare stage. The drama is enhanced by projections, sound effects and creative physical-theater techniques.
“Star of the Sea” is set during the Irish fame of the mid-19th century. It concerns a group of Irish refugees on a sea voyage to America. Their motives for the trip are varied, but all are escaping one sort of life and hoping for a better one elsewhere.
Moonfish brings “Star of the Sea” to the University of St. Joseph’s Hoffman Auditorium (inside Bruyette Athenaeum), 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford.
