John Oliver’s visited Connecticut numerous times with his stand-up act, but that was all before his HBO series “Last Week Tonight” placed the former “Daily Show” correspondent into a comedy-news anchorman on par with Jon Stewart and Bill Maher.

Praise for the show has even come from the humorless: The Nation magazine named “Last Week Tonight” as its “Most Valuable Cable TV” program of 2014 for its in-depth reporting on touchy subjects, calling it “funny, profound and required viewing.” Oliver still leads the anchor desk for the occasional live solo show. He’ll be at the Grand Theatre on the Foxwoods Resort Casino Project in Ledyard 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. $50. foxwoods.com.
